Dave’s Free Play, Thursday 12/31/15

No content other than the daily free play for the next couple of days. The usual format will return on Saturday. But there will be the daily free play, as always. I'll likely have a New Year's Day Bowl game on Friday. Meanwhile, here's one for Thursday evening in college basketball. 535 PORTLAND  @  536 SAN FRANCISCO Take: PORTLAND -2 Let's ... More

I meant to write about this last week sometime, but never got to it. Better late than never. Sports Illustrated recently came out with its annual Sportsperson of the Year Award, which went to Serena Williams. No argument there, she's beyond amazing. So was Bryce Harper, who naturally was the MLB Player of the Year, the Warriors won their category, Tom ... More

I have certain rules that I follow on Twitter. Right at the very top of the list is a mandate not to criticize those I have any type of business relationship with. Doing so would be counterproductive, and that's putting it mildly. It amuses me to no end when some people rip me for not doing the same to various entities in my industry or my city. If you ... The Arizona Cardinals will likely enter the playoffs as the #2 NFC seed. But I've got them atop my power ratings as the best team in the league, and they sure looked like it on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals destroyed Green Bay in a totally lopsided 38-8 mauling. My #2 NFC team is Seattle, even though the Seahawks were big upset victims to a mediocre ... More

I've never made a secret of the fact I'm "old school" when it comes to the game of football. Win the rushing stats on offense and defense and win the game. Control the line of scrimmage and win the game. Deceive the opponent when you can, but physically dominate in the trenches and win the game. That's the way football has always been, and it's my belief ... More

The first results are in for this season's NBA All-Star balloting. To what should be the surprise of absolutely nobody, Kobe Bryant is getting the most votes, leading Stephen Curry by a wide margin. Yet, some folks seem to be up in arms over this perceived injustice. In the spirit of the season, I think it's fair to refer to these people as grinches. ... More

Short and sweet holiday edition. Good job by San Diego State as the only Thursday play. The Aztecs took the opening kickoff back for a score and this was one of those rare games where it was pretty clear very early that only one team had come to play. Congrats to Rocky Long and the entire SDSU staff for a great run, as the team started the season 1-3, ... More

Merry Christmas!

First, the good news. The Mountain West Conference has announced that the league basketball tournaments, both the men's and women's, will be staying in Las Vegas for the next several years. They're now signed, sealed and delivered through 2019, and that's a smart decision on every level. The fans love coming to Las Vegas, the Thomas & Mack remains an ... More

I'm not a member of the Baseball Writers of America Association. Therefore this ballot doesn't count for anything. But I'm a seamhead to be sure, and therefore I just had to cast my votes for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. Just like the actual voters, I allowed myself the option of choosing up to ten players. I decided to fill the entire ballot, although ... More

I made the comment some weeks ago that the Kansas City Chiefs had a legitimate chance to put together a 10-game winning streak. That wasn't as daring as it might seem, as the team had a dream schedule down the stretch. I also stated that this would get them one of the two AFC wild card berths. I might have sold the Chiefs short on that one. It's suddenly ... More

Helluva effort by UNLV at Arizona on Saturday night. They battled the Wildcats for the full 40 minutes and the final 82-70 tally was probably a bit misleading. From a pointspread perspective, in fact, this was a really tough beat for Runnin' Rebel backers as Arizona scored the last six points and there was a missed layup by UNLV with two seconds to play. ...
