Cokin’s Corner, Friday 1/11/19

  • January 10, 2019

I wasn’t involved in any of the Thursday bad beats in college basketball. But make no mistake, this was one of those night where underdogs in overtime proved to be pretty nasty for those who were backing them.

Elon was +10 at home against Northeatern. The Huskies ended up winning by 11 in the OT.

Hofstra and William & Mary played a three overtime thriller. Only the final score might have been too thrilling for those who took the underdog Tribe late, as the game closed Hofstra -2.5 and landed on three.

SIU Edwardsville actually went off -1 at Tennessee Tech after being dogs of as much as 2.5. In the end, you were doomed regardless of the price as Tech ended up winning by nine in the extra session.

USC was the dog at Oregon State. This line closed at +2 when it was determined Oregon State star Tres Tinkle would miss the game. The Trojans were widely available at +4.5 prior to that news. USC went down by five on overtime.

And then there was Monmouth-Quinnipac. This one was epic. The Hawks were getting as much as +5.5 during the day, althougb the game closed with Quinny -4.5. One point game with just four seconds remaining in the second OT. Foul and one of two FT’s made gets the margin to two. Hawks turnover on an offensive foul with one second to play, and the the dreaded technical foul on Monmouth. Quinnipiac ends up canning four free throws with 0:00 on the clock and they win by six. It doesn’t get any worse than that if you’re on the dog, and it’s a winning lottery ticket if you had the favorite.

I gave back some of the profits on Thursday. 1-2 hoops and a tough OT loser on the ice. -2.4 overall, which is never enjoyable. The good news is the down results have been pretty infrequent and this amounted to the house getting back a little of their own money.

The daily free plays have hit a little pothole the last few days. I’ don’t have much for Friday as it’s a very short slate and it looks like a pass for me. Here’s the game that came closest to qualifying on my projections, but be aware it’s barely a lean. I’m sure I’ll find something more substantial to use as the Saturday free play, but meanwhile here’s something for a bit of Friday amusement.

IONA at NIAGARA

Take: IONA +1.5
