Cokin’s Corner, Friday 12/28/18

  • December 27, 2018

The value of late information was on display Friday morning. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve stressed the importance of being on Twitter. Not so much for the conversation as that might be of little interest to some. But if you’re wagering, then Twitter is an incredibly valuable resource.

The latest example of why that’s a truism was illustrated within an hour of the Temple-Duke kickoff. The Owls announced that two of their best players would be sitting the game out as a precautionary measure with Senior Bowl appearances and draft combine workouts just around the bend.

Sell signs don’t come much stronger than this. It was a clear indication to me that this was potentially deflating to the Owls from a mental standpoint. Temple got out of the gate nicely, and actually led 27-14. But they were never in anything resembling even mild control and once Duke got rolling the Owls simply called it a day.

Thanks to Twitter for being the vehicle to provide info that otherwise would not have been attainable!

Let’s head right to the Friday free play, and this one is a personal play on today’s Camping World Bowl matchup.

Admittedly a little late to the party as far as line value is concerned. But I thought it wise to try and get a gauge on how excited West Virginia is about this game. The info I’m seeing is not positive. Leadership is clearly in question with no Grier or Cajuste, and the Mountaineers had a terrible ending to the regular season. I really have doubts about whether they want to even be playing this bowl game. Maybe the kids that will be getting lots of action deliver, but I don’t think there’s a positive vibe here. Syracuse will be fired up with this being the finale for Eric Dungey, one of the grittiest QB’s you’ll ever see. I am not putting much stock into anything other than perceived motivation here and that has me on the Syracuse side.
