Cokin’s Corner, Friday 2/15/19
It had to happen sometime. The Vegas Golden Knights are experiencing some real adversity for the first time in their brief history.
Seven losses in nine games, including a stunning 0-5 run at home and the Knights are now starting to look like a team that has lost a bit of its swagger. The offense just isn’t producing, the defensive zone giveaways are getting troublesome and even goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has been at less than his best recently.
I would not call it panic mode to suggest that the Knights are going to have to bite the bullet and make a deal as the trade deadline approaches. From where I sit, the most pressing need is getting a James Neal type sniper for the stretch run.
My other take is that backup goalie Malcolm Subban is going to have to be trusted to start more than once every moon cycle. As great as Fleury has been for the Knights, he’s looking a bit worn down. At this point, it’s all about getting prepped for the playoffs far more than the balance of the regular season. I believe that means getting Fleury as fresh as possible as he is still going to be the single most important player on the team come Cup time.
Nice night here on Thursday. The half unit system stuff in hoops only split at 2-2. But the full unit plays on Sacramento State and the small dog Maple Leafs got there, so a solid black ink night. I’ll have a few small system plays on Friday plus one stronger opinion in basketball and the pucks will be determined in the morning. Here’s one of the system sides to be used as the daily free play.
