Cokin’s Corner, Monday 1/7/19

We’re down to the NFL version of the Elite Eight after a weekend where the road teams did a number on the home teams in the Wildcard Round. Three of the visitors won outright and all four guests got the money from a spread standpoint.

Quick take on the Sunday games was that none of the four teams involved looked like Super Bowl material. The Chargers and Eagles survived. One cannot help but wonder what might have happened had Ravens head coach John Harbaugh made a couple of different decisions. I’m not sure Joe Flacco would have fared any better than Lamar Jackson, although there’s plenty of sentiment that the rookie should have been yanked. I thought the decision by Harbaugh to try a long field goal on a 4th and 1 in plus territory while trailing 12-3 was a real head scratcher. Maybe the result remains the same, but that was a potentially critical mistake that sure didn’t help the Baltimore cause.

As for the Eagles and Bears, Cody Parkey got the rest of the team off the hook by missing the game winning field goal. But I cannot put all the blame on Parkey. The Bears had ample opportunities to put this game away and failed. Moreover, when the vaunted Chicago defense needed to get just one stop to win the game, they failed. The Eagles converted two third and longs and then got the lead on a fourth down play. That’s on the Bears defense and credit to Nick Foles has to be accorded as he again made the big plays when he needed to.

I have not yet put together my numbers for next weekend’s games, although I’m pretty sure I’ll have at least one good play. Plenty of time to decide.

2-0 Sunday sweep here with very easy winners on Dayton in college basketball and the underdog Oilers on the ice. The value of getting those head coach post game quotes paid off in the Edmonton game. The Oilers were verbally lambasted by Ken Hitchcock following a no-show on Saturday night against the Kings and the team responded with a terrific win against the reeling Ducks.

2019 has picked up right where the last few months of 2018 left off. I have a new special now available at the Cokin’s Picks menu to the right of the page. That’s the +5 guaranteed offer. Email me at for all the details.

I’ve got a play on the Clemson-Alabama game tonight. I won’t know about the NHL until the morning. That leaves just the two college basketball games on the Monday slate as the choice for the daily comp. This is not a play for me at this point and probably won’t be, but it’s a lean on my projections.
