Cokin’s Corner, Monday 8/20/18
The college football season kicks off this Saturday with a pair of games. This is basically Week Zero of the campaign. Just two games, and if this happened to be a full schedule, not much attention would be focused on this pair. Wyoming-New Mexico State and Hawaii-Colorado State are not exactly marquee material, although the latter is a conference hookup. But the bottom line is it’s the return of college football and a nice appetizer to what is a Week One slate that’s loaded with intriguing matchups.
As for the NFL, the Ravens and Colts will close out Week Two with the Monday night matchup that actually offers good reasons to watch. Andrew Luck will play on his home field for the first time in way too long as he quarterbacks the Colts. Meanwhile, it’s another chance to watch Ravens rookie QB Lama Jackson. Baltimore fans are hoping to see some improvement from the former Louisville start following two games in which his accuracy throwing the football has been more than a little shaky.
I won’t be playing this game, but have a few thoughts on it, enough for at least a lean. Therefore, I’l use the game as the daily free play.
RAVENS at COLTS
Take: RAVENS -1.5
Not a lot for me on this game as I’m not seeing any expected personnel edges in terms of depth chart rotation, and that’s a key for when breaking down NFL preseason games.
What I do know is these teams are likely delighted to actually get on the field in game conditions. They’ve seen enough of one another with the joint practices and there was a pretty good sized brawl that took place on Saturday.
The lean is to Baltimore. The Ravens have been preseason monsters under John Harbaugh. It’s worth mentioning that Harbaugh has been very upbeat. Harbaugh’s quote following Saturdays practice was that it has been “our best camp in terms of guys focused on getting better every day” and given this coach’s history in the games, that has to be construed as a positive.
The betting action on the game has favored the Ravens, and they’ve gone from opening as mini-dogs to now being mini-chalk. No surprise there, as it’s no secret Harbaugh, whether by design or not, likes to win the August games. Or at least he’s more a stickler for proper execution that often results in exhibition game wins. Opinion here is the Ravens win this one, but it’s that, an opinion, and not an actual play for me.
What is a play for me is one of the two Saturday college games. That has already been sent to my subscribers and I like my chances of opening the season with a winner.
