Cokin’s Corner, Saturday 12/31/16
It’s the usual abbreviated Saturday blog. 131 basketball games, plus four bowls, plus 11 NHL matchups. When all is said and done, I’ll only be involved in a small percentage of the games, but the work still has to be done on all of them. No time for anything other than a quick recap and the daily free play.
Friday was okay. 3-0 in college basketball, 0-2 in the bowls. Stanford was a true horror show beat. The Cardinal lost their starting QB to an injury, but still looked to be in great shape up five and with a first and goal at the UNC 1. No dice. Settled for a field goal and the Heels went down the field, scored and missed the deuce, and the final landed on two. Push for some players perhaps, but the consensus was -2.5, so it’s officially a loss. 3-2 is cool, but 4-1 would have been far better. Good news is it happened on a winning day. The bad beats sting more when that’s not the case.
Here’s the free play for Saturday and I’ll make it on one of the two playoff games.
273 OHIO STATE vs. 274 CLEMSON
Take: OHIO STATE -2.5
I might have pulled the trigger a little early on this one as far as the line goes, as I wasn’t anticipating the public backing Clemson. But that’s been the story so far.
This is the toughest game on the Saturday college slate for me, to be honest. Clemson has a definite experience edge in terms of big games and Swinney is a very tough game coach. I actually think he’s right there with Meyer on that count, which means he’s an elite coach.
But I still power rated this game Buckeyes -5 and they do own the offensive and defensive rushing stats edges. Teams fitting those parameters are 9-4 SU and 7-6 ATS in the bowls so far, so while it’s not crushing, it’s still winning, and I basically won’t go against those stats.
Gut feeling is this is a real seat squirmer, but between the stats and the power ratings I have Ohio State winning, so at this price the Buckeyes are the play.
