Cokin’s Corner, Sunday 1/27/19

Sometime over the next few days, I’ll post a rundown of college basketball coaches in what amounts to the handwriting is on the wall category. The motivation here is to isolate teams that might be mailing it in down the stretch. The aim is to find schools that should probably be fade material in many spots and playing on them should mostly be avoided.

This usually works pretty well in the final month of the regular season, and believe it or not, we’re just about already there. Time flies when you’re having fun. And even when you’re not, for that matter.

I went 2-3 on Saturday. Two easy winners, two pretty clear cut losses although one of those looked closer than it actually was as far as the spread goes. The swing game was Columbia -3.5 winning by three and I’ll just avoid a late game recap I really don’t feel like writing about it. Suffice to say this one was right side, wrong result material but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I’ve got two I’m set on for Sunday. One is the early Big East game, and I’ll toss that out as the daily comp.

The first meeting was another thriller between these two old rivals with St. John’s winning in overtime. The game was close all the way, except for the early going when the the Hoyas sprinted out to a decent lead. After that, the teams traded small runs before the Red Storm finally got the nod in the OT. That was business as usual in this series, which has featured a load of tight battles over all these years. Georgetown also remains an underdog team. Hoyas are go with as a dog and fade as a favorite. Since Ewing took over as head coach, the dog has covered at a 29-19-1 rate in all games. I expect a rerun of the first meeting this season and I’ll be taking a good number of points with Georgetown.
