Cokin’s Corner, Sunday 8/26/18
The college football season is officially underway. The first big upset of the new campaign spree didn’t take long to happen, as Hawaii didn’t need any of the 17.5 or so points they were getting as they nocked off Colorado State. The favorite cruised in the nightcap as Wyoming dominated New Mexico State.
A couple of takeaways from the openers. First and foremost, don’t overreact to what you saw. Colorado State was very poorly prepared for its game. That could well be at least partially due to head coach Mike Bobo being absent from the practices for several days as he battled an illness. Bobo was mostly just an observer for this game, sitting upstairs in the coaching booth.
As for Hawaii, right place at the right time applies. Nice win to be sure, but this team will face a much tougher challenge next week as Navy heads to the islands.
Wyoming was already a known quantity on defense, and that unit lived up to billing as they completely shut down New Mexico State. The Cowboys offense remains wait and see material, although they might just have themselves a running game. I thought the broadcast team on ESPn went a bot overboard in their over the top praise. New Mexico State is not good and Wyoming did what they were supposed to do in handling the Aggies.
I’ve already played a pair of Thursday games, one of which I like enough to have added an extra half unit of support. I’ll eventually post this game online at the sites that sell my stuff, but my subscribers get all my plays first. If you’d like to join that club, choose one of the packages available at the right of the page where it reads “Cokin’s Picks”, or email me at email@example.com for more info.
Leave it to the pathetic Orioles to blow up the doubleheader split angle. That one was over in a hurry. Here’s a comp play fro Sunday, and please note it’s the latest in what has been a blind follow for what is now close to two weeks.
CARDINALS at ROCKIES
Take: CARDINALS +130
Redbirds are perfect when Gomber starts. It’s not an easy spot for him here as the Rockies can do nasty things to lefties in this ballpark. But it’s not like Tyler Anderson is setting the world on fire and there’s a pretty good price to be had here. I’m 9-2 playing the Cardinals in this stretch they’ve enjoyed and one loss in a game that was tied 1-1 in the 8th is not going to cause me to back off just yet. Cardinals are the choice once again.
