Cokin’s Corner, Tuesday 12/4/18
40 bowls in 40 minutes!
That’s a tease for the Tuesday edition of The Las Vegas Sportsline. Marco D’Angelo and I will be doing quick hits on each of the 40 bowl games. Actually, there are 41 but we’re skipping the Celebration Bowl between Alcorn State and North Carolina A&T. I know less than nothing about those two programs, and besides, it’s going to be a helluva challenge to get through the 80 teams Marco and I know something about.
Listen to the show live from 2-3 Pacific time on ESPN Las Vegas. Online feed is at lvsportsnetwork.com.
0-1 on Monday as the Oilers sans McDavid came up short at Dallas. Meanwhile, I’ve sent my first two bowl plays out to subscribers, with more to come shortly. Get the Bowl Bonanza at the Cokin’s picks menu the to the right of the page. If you’re interested in getting all my plays across the board, which would also include CBB, NHL and NFL (not doing the NBA), shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Here’s the Tuesday free play.
743 FURMAN at 744 ELON
Furman is now ranked in the Top 25 for the first time ever. I don’t have the Paladins anywhere near that level on my power ratings. But the team has road wins at Loyola Chicago and at Villanova and they are 8-0.
I normally might look to go against a team unaccustomed to this kind of spotlight. It’s a perfect recipe for a fat and happy letdown. But I think Furman got its scare over the weekend when they needed two overtimes to dispose of a very weak Western Carolina team. I’m banking on a more focused effort here.
Despite my feeling that the Paladins are overrated, they still show up as a numbers play for me. That’s because Elon is playing some terrible basketball. Something is clearly not right with this team and I have to think their longtime coach is on the hot seat. The Phoenix were a big disappointment last season and despite having a wealth of experience, they’re playing even worse this season. Elon is doing nothing well. I suppose there should be some excitement about hosting a ranked opponent, as it’s just the third time Elon has ever done so. But the Phoenix are dropping like a rock in my ratings and I cannot see anything to suggest they’re suddenly going to turn it around. I’ll take my chances with Furman as road chalk.
Take: FURMAN -6.5
