Dave’s Free Play, Monday 2/18/13

  • February 18, 2013

One of the monster bad beats of the season took place on Sunday evening as Illinois State managed to give up an 8-0 run to Wichita State in roughly the final 40 seconds. The sequence was as follows. Illinois State up five, missed Wichita State shot. Carmichael rebounds, and for reasons he probably doesn’t even know himself, he decides to extend his right leg right into the face of a Wichita player. Was it intentional? Yeah, it sure looked like it. Flagrant foul is called, two Wichita free throws, followed by a three-pointer, followed by an Illinois State turnover, followed by another Wichita three…followed by an explosion of profanity by this observer as a relatively sure winner instantly transforms itself into an epic moose.

Fortunately, despite blowing the lead late in regulation, the St. Louis Blues won the shootout at Vancouver, so I got out of the day 2-2 overall with a tiny profit.

Easy winner on the free play as Illinois clobbered a very beat up Northwestern entry. On to Monday, and the comp this time is from the Big Sky.

Tough times this season for both Eastern Washington and Portland State a pair of low end Big Sky clubs. But someone has to win this, and I will be giving the nod to the home team. Not the worst chart play you’ll see, with Portland State finally snapping an 0-8 SU, 0-9 ATS run with the blowout over Southern Utah on Thursday. Eastern Washington is also off a nice win as the Eagles throttled the Thunderbirds as well on Saturday. But Eastern Washington remains a money burner on the road, while the Vikings have some okay numbers at home long term. I don’t have a problem with this spread as I actually make the home team slightly better than the number, so I’ll side with Portland State minus the points tonight.
